Due to the burner design, the gas fuel source is allowed enough oxygen to burn cleanly, eliminating the need to vent the combustion gases. Most of these untis are equipped with an Oxygen Depletion Sensor (ODS) as an added means of safety. Vent free fireplaces are 99.9% efficient, meaning you get out exactly what you put in. Vent free fireplaces are very popular, mainly for their efficiency and because they can be installed almost anywhere, without the need for a chimney. Direct vent units may be vented vertically up a chimney or horizontally through an exterior wall. Direct vent units are completely sealed so there are no smells or exhaust associated with burning.
